Steel Membrane Stadium

1,The Kunshan Olympic Sports Center, designed in collaboration between GMP and Tongji University Architectural Design Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese handicraft "scroll fan". The design concept showcases the local cultural characteristics and gives the building a unique visual effect. At the same time, the soft and transparent PTFE membrane structure forms the fan surface of the scroll fan facade.

2,The seating stands, facades and roof structures are supported by 36 pairs of slender folded concrete walls, creating a grand and lively space beneath the stands and in the ground area. An unfolded external facade cable-membrane structure is set between each pair of cast-in-place concrete components. Each cable-membrane structure is approximately 49 meters in height (total height, with the membrane height being about 26 meters and the length being about 34 meters), and each external facade unit has an area of approximately 600 square meters, making it the largest single-membrane structure in China at present.

3,The roof structure is supported by 36 slender cantilevered steel beams. The upper chord members are the extensions of concrete double walls on the roof layer. The rods are covered with membrane materials, creating a distinct folding effect, which extends along the exterior wall towards the roof structure. During the day, the membrane materials provide shading and rain protection functions; when night falls, the internal lighting of the venue penetrates the translucent membrane materials, spreading out a soft light. Thus, the membrane materials not only create the lighting effect for the exterior of the venue, but also reflect light into the venue, providing uniform and comfortable lighting for the spectator areas.
